Curriculum Areas - Geography
Introduction
The following courses are followed:
Year 8
The course is divided into 4 modules:
- Map and Atlas Skills
- Tropical Environments
- Rivers and River Management
- Weather and Climate
Year 9
The course divides into 2 broad areas:
- Development
- Environmental Issues
The theme of development is studied through units on:
- Measuring differences between rich and poor countries
- Investigating why some countries are more developed than others
- Looking at globalization and deciding whether it is a good or bad thing
- A case study of Japan
Environmental issues are studied locally, nationally and globally; firstly through tourism, and secondly by looking closely at global warming and our responses to it.
Years 10 and 11

Examinations are Tiered - Higher and Foundation
- Paper 1F or 3H on Core Units 1 hour 45 Minutes. 45%
- Papers 2F or 4H: an option unit. 1 hour 15 minutes. 30%
- Coursework: A Geographical Investigation supported by fieldwork. 25%
