Curriculum Areas - Modern Languages

Introduction

All our pupils will have the opportunity to study one or more European language, at present we teach French and German.

All our pupils will have a meaningful experience of language study with adequate time and appropriate teaching to make progress according to their ability. The most able will be continually stretched and challenged, those who find language learning less straightforward will be supported to realise their potential. The language learning experience will be rich and varied as the pupils are given opportunities for genuine communication in the target language and to confront ideas and issues relevant to their own lives and to those of their counterparts abroad.

As a result of studying a foreign language pupils will:

  • develop a deeper understanding of how language works
  • develop a deeper understanding of how their own language works
  • develop their reading skills
  • develop transferable language learning skills
  • understand how to take responsibility for their own learning
  • develop study skills
  • develop an understanding of the culture of the target language country
  • broaden their horizons
  • develop self-confidence
  • develop their communication skills in the broadest sense
  • have the confidence to express themselves in the target language

Language learners and teachers at Lynn Grove are very fortunate to have access to digital technology available to support language learning. Our multimedia language learning lab is equipped with 15 computers and a Tandberg Control desk which allows the pupils to communicate with one another and with the teacher's desk. Every clasroom in the MFL suite of rooms is fitted with a data projector or an interactive whiteboard, and the department has invested heavily in a range of software applications to enance pupil learning.

We are particularly interested in making contacts with schools in the EU and particularly France and Germany to share ideas and activities between pupils and staff alike. All the pupils and staff enjoy using advanced technologies to support their teaching and learning and we are proud of the high quality resources that we have worked together to produce. We are very happy to share our experiences and are always looking to learn new ideas from others in the area of computer aided language learning.
