Learning Resource Centre (LRC)

Welcome to the new Learning Resource Centre

Lynn Grove Learning Resources Centre is impressive by any standards, both in size and décor and for the range of resources. The new LRC is open plan and air-conditioned, and contains 10,000 books and 42 PCs, spread over two floors. Sections of this independent learning area are available for whole form groups to be accommodated. Teachers bring pupils in to research topics and reinforce learning. Work can then be enhanced using Vista on the PCs and by using the LRC printing facilities.

Mrs Bowles is very happy to help you find what you are looking for, be it in books or on the internet. She has been joined this year by Assistants Miss Ross and Miss Dobinson. This increased staffing enables the LRC to be open from 8am-5.30pm.

We have introduced the Eclipse.net Library System which manages all the books and resources and incorporates the use of Identikit, a finger recognition unit. This system allows pupils to be issued with books and eliminates the need for library cards. To search or browse our list of resources click on Eclipse Catalogue. Quiet reading lessons are held in the LRC and you can complete your homework, revision or coursework in the quiet environment.

The Grand Opening

We were proud to have had Kevin Crossley-Holland (Carnegie Medal Winner) open our superb new facility on September 5th 2007.

Additional Information

The LRC has a great range of periodicals providing information on subjects as diverse as art, warhammer, food, nature, science, sports, cars, music and technology. We also receive The Times, The Guardian, The EDP and The Mercury daily newspapers. We’ve made it easy for you to find fiction by categorizing our books according to a coloured sticky label atS the bottom of the spine. These are shelved alphabetically and marked with the first initial of the Author’s surname. See the guide to the LRC's Fiction labelling system. Pupils new to the school have LRC induction classes where LRC staff explain the simple rules. They are shown how to use the LRC in order that they feel comfortable with what is expected of them. This has proved to be a successful way to encourage pupils to use the facility.

The LRC rules are simple and practical:

  • No noise
  • No bags
  • No eating
  • Respect body space distance of other pupils
  • No touching other pupils work
  • Computers are for research, not for playing games
  • No more than two pupils per computer
  • Neat uniform is expected at all times

Some new pupils may like to apply to be librarians to help tidy and issue the books at break and lunchtimes. This can be a rewarding occupation and it looks great on a CV.

The LRC staff look forward to introducing you to this new facility.

Mobile Phone Recycling Campaign 2007

Did you know?

  • There are over 100 million redundant mobile phones in the UK
  • Every year over 1000 tonnes of mobiles are thrown away
  • If you have finished with a mobile, it doesn't mean others can't still use it
  • Your old mobile phones will be sent to developing countries where they will be reused
  • By recycling old mobile phones you will help to protect the environment

Please collect as many unused mobile phones as you can from your family and friends (ask their permission first!) and take them to Mrs Bowles in the LRC.

Remember! Every mobile phone collected helps the environment and developing countries, as well as raising funds for the school.

Mrs Bowles Top Tips

  • Mrs Bowles Recommended Reading List
  • Mrs Bowles Other Recommended Books for Parents to Buy
  • You can't judge a book by its cover; I hope you will be surprised by the lives of the people in my books
  • You can't judge a book by its title or blurb - these are designed to sell books
  • You can't judge a book by its age and condition, because most new books are the same stories in new jackets
  • Its not uncool to read, it is uncool to leave school without knowing much about what it is like to walk in someone else's shoes - not being good at imagining lives other than your own. Reading people well is picked up from reading books
  • A bookmark under the line you are reading helps to keep your eyes from wandering all over the page
