To progress Lynn Grove High School’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with the communities it serves as well as making a positive contribution to environmental conservation, pupils have formed an ‘Eco-Warrior’ club under the supervision of Mrs Bowles and Mrs Currell.Since the beginning of September, this group meets every Tuesday evening to discuss and plan how the school can sustain an effective Eco School programme where all pupils and staff can contribute to sustaining a ‘Green School’. Since September, they have added to the school's efforts at recycling and waste management through the introduction of projects such as ‘Reusing textiles, and ‘Composting’ project. The Eco-Warrior club is made up of different teams responsible for researching, planning and managing an eco-friendly school. One of the teams is responsible for the community garden project and its chief responsibility is to design and maintain an outdoor community garden that is accessible to all interested pupils, staff, local businesses, community and voluntary sector partners. This project is the first of its kind in the area and epitomizes what community cohesion is all about. The team responsible for the indoor gardening has researched the value of plants and flowers within classrooms. They have begun collecting resources such as plant pots and ‘spider plant’ cuttings for propagation. Their aim is to ensure that all classrooms have plants which will be cared for by the form pupils of that class. Another team within the club is responsible for reducing the amount of litter found around the school. After a month of research which included observations during the school break times and surveys with pupils and teachers, they have drawn up an action plan to support their findings. A copy of the approved action plan has been circulated to all staff, pupils and parents. The team responsible for ecological classroom activities which includes recycling, economical use of electricity and environmental awareness has been busy devising ways to promote eco-friendly activities within lessons and form time. They have looked at possible actions such as key classroom rules to minimize waste and fuel usage, online quizzes and games to promote eco awareness and possible tutor topics for discussions and debates. They have formulated an Eco Code for the school which is displayed in all rooms within the school. All form classes now have a Green Rep, who meets with the team once a term to evaluate the actvities to date and to plan new initiatives. The ICT team has looked at ways technology can be used to raise awareness and promote positive behaviour as well as the safe and eco-friendly use of technology such as computers and projectors. Their action plan has been submitted to SMT and the governors for discussion and feedback. The Eco-Warrior club has given pupils the opportunity to become more socially and environmentally responsible citizens and leaders. By taking ownership of the project, they feel the need to make a positive contribution to the school and its duties and are willing to share their knowledge and findings with parents, staff and other pupils. They firmly believe that change is only possible if everyone involved in the school shares their responsibility and plays a part in making the school a ‘Green’ school. If any individuals, businesses or community groups would like to become involved in any of the team's ventures, then please email the school on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
